But God

There are two words in Scripture that I've been thinking about lately.

But God.

The more I sit with them, the more I realize they may be two of the most hope-filled words in the entire Bible.

Every time I read them, something changes.

The sentence changes.

The direction changes.

The outcome changes.

It almost always starts with heartbreak.

Someone failed.

Someone sinned.

Someone was betrayed.

Someone was afraid.

Someone had reached the end of what they could do.

Then...

But God.

Those two words remind me that the story isn't over just because people think it is.

They remind me that our circumstances don't get the final say.

God does.

Joseph's brothers meant evil against him.

But God.

We were dead in our sins.

But God.

Over and over, Scripture reminds us that what looks like the end to us is often the exact place where God begins to work.

I think that's why I love those two words so much.

They leave room for hope.

Maybe that's where you are today.

Maybe your sentence currently reads...

"I've done everything I know to do..."

"But God."

"I've been praying for years..."

"But God."

"I don't know how this is going to work out..."

"But God."

Those two words remind me that God has always been in the business of changing conditions.

Not always on my timeline.

Not always in the way I expected.

But always according to His purpose.

So maybe today isn't the end of your story.

Maybe you're just standing at the comma before the words...

But God.
